The song of the afternoon wraps me in its warmth for a while. Before break of evening, we sit awhile, enjoying the company of one another. She tells me of her day and I listen intently. I offer her a cup of tea, to stay a while. She thanks me, but I understand that she can't stay for long. But I enjoy any time I can get in her soft splendor.
We walk the block, taking in the sounds of the neighborhood. The kids coming home from school. Their fathers wrapping up the day's lawn work. The mothers humming in the kitchen over dinner preparations. She holds my hand as we take turns jumping over puddles.
She reminds me to breathe. To let go of the day's worries and breathe in the days triumphs. I plead with her to keep her light going, for just a little bit longer. She does what she can, but naturally, can't stop from fading faster and faster into the evening.
I enjoy her light while I can, but I must admit, I will miss her when December comes around.
