unusual

October 19, 2024

Don't you find it odd? The sudden unfriendly nature of those around you? In the store, at work or school, on the road, over the phone. Short. Put out. Grumbling.

You wait in line and tension surrounds you. You find yourself wanting to get sucked in, wanting to complain. But what's the use? Why complain about things out of your control? Why bring down the day for those around you?

There's enough misery and bitterness in the world already. Is calling the cashier a bitch really going to make a change? Now she goes home, after an arduous day, and lives with being a "bitch". To a stranger. Someone who knows nothing of her intricacies and fears.

You lay on the horn as traffic stacks itself before you. Does it make it move faster? No. Does it make you feel better? Maybe. Momentarily. Does it build the chaos? Most definitely. Chaos that builds and accumulates, like a layer of smog over those around you.

It's unusual, how put out we've become. Nothing is good enough. No one is good enough. All that matters is "me". Where has the community gone? A cup of sugar for your neighbor. A touch of gasoline lent when your engine is left sputtering. Maybe its worth it to set it all aside for a moment. To listen. To learn. To exchange a grumble for a smile. It couldn't hurt.
